Winter Blues – How to Deal with Winter Depression

You may have been incredibly effective. However, as soon as the first icy wind blows, the sign of winters approaching is clear. Winters bring snow and many wonderful experiences. Who doesn’t love going out without having to worry about intense heat? Who doesn’t love the sight of snowflakes? Other than this, the warm and cozy environment illuminated by radiant fire is the work of art. It has a pleasing effect on us. Winters somehow allow this environment to be created in every house.
Along with the fun, there also come mood changes. The problem with mood changes is that they bring depression. This depression doesn’t allow us to enjoy the winters. It allows us to become passive. Where we are supposed to relish the blessings of new seasons, it simply dulls our senses.
2 - Cause of Winter Depression:
The reason for winter blues is typically related to hormonal changes due to seasonal shifts. Some consider it to be related to psychological factors. Winter Blues are also called, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While the exact causes are mostly theories, their effect on us is very real. Some of the main causes of winter blues are:
2.1 - The pattern of Body Clock:
We have a certain body clock. Body clock means how your body is accustomed to certain behaviors. These behaviors are time and season-specific. Therefore, in spring and summer, our body clock is in active mode. When winter kicks in, the body clock is simply adjusted to passive mode.
2.2 - Hormone Changes:
Our hormones change usually by season changes. In winters, there is a drop in the level of a special hormone. It is called serotonin. Serotonin is associated with happier emotions. When this hormone drops its level, we simply feel more depressed and passive.
2.3 - Sleep Pattern:
Another hormone responsible for sleep and mood patterns changes its level. In winters, this hormone called melatonin is affected. As our sleep pattern changes due to change in times of dawn and dusk, so does our mood. Human minds aren’t very good at adapting themselves to change generally.

It is natural for us to feel uncertain about the change. Especially when we experience the seasonal changes in our hormones, we get worried about new emotions popping up. You must, however, differentiate it with clinical depression.

Winter blues simply cause worries. However, they are not that serious. You may want to procrastinate a lot. Avoiding daily routine and its responsibilities may seem tempting to you.
3.2 - Sleep Problems:
Isn’t it obvious? The sleep problems occur due to changes in the timings of dawn and dusk. We become accustomed to sleeping in fixed schedules. Waking up at 6 or 7 am may not be a big deal in summers. But when you wake up at 6 am and still see dark outside, your bed won’t allow you to leave.
3.3 - Lethargy:
You will naturally feel down. Your energy is not low. You have actually put on laziness mode in winters. The uneven temperature in covers and outside world is putting bounds on you. You also start feeling more sleepy. Due to this, you will naturally feel lethargic after a few hours of work. In such a case, it is best advised to take a break and then start again refreshed.
3.4 - Anti-social Behavior:
Anti-Social behavior is another by-product of hormonal changes. When the winters approach, our anti-social behavior increases. Maintaining social life is an active process. Managing it with a suitable dose of solitude is a skill. In winters, we become too passive to do anything. Our socialization is one of them.
3.5 - Mood Swings:
You will naturally require an environment of peace and quiet. As we become passive, we procrastinate. As a result of procrastination, work starts piling up more and more. As a result, we feel more irritated due to the inability to properly cope up with a busy life. This simply produces frustration at small things that require our time. We want to make time for doing those essential tasks later. When we are required to do something else at that time, irritation fills us up.
Tips for Coping with Winter Blues
Finally, we will discuss a few handy tips for coping with winter depression. Naturally, you will feel burdened by some of them such as exercise. However, give yourself time. Start being active but do so in subtle ways. The trick is to shift ourselves from the passive to active gradually. If you try being active for 10 hours, you will be in bed the next day, procrastinating and enjoying your hot chocolate.
4.1 - Exercise:
Don’t be put off by the mere mention of exercise. On the internet, there are 5 minutes to 10 minutes of workouts. They are usually very effective. In case if you don’t feel like working out, simply give an hour or two for walking. This will put your active mode on.
Exercise has many benefits. It allows us to remain active. Exercising also releases serotonin. This release of the hormone can make up for its drop-in winters. Apart from that, exercise also de-clutters your mind. Your energy will find a healthy way to release.
4.2 - Balanced Textures in Environment:
In winters, we often switch towards darker shades. It feels natural to us. However, it is not helping in any case. The darker shades can sometimes induce passiveness and depression. Therefore, you will want to keep a balance of shades.
4.3 - Enjoy Daylight:
Your body doesn’t crave more darkness. It actually asks for solitude due to changing hormones.
The daylight can be a huge help. Just seeing proper sunshine makes us happy. To mix a dose of happiness with a change in winter is the ultimate recipe for enjoyable winters. Try getting more and more sunlight. It will lighten you up.
4.4 - Keep yourself Warm:
Do not adjust to wearing thin clothes or keeping your house cold without any reason. Cold adjusts our behavior towards further depression. It may also be a cause of illness.
Keep a warm environment in the home. Wear thick clothes.
